Our Story

African Beads Designs began in 2012 when founder Maya Okafor, after years of studying traditional beadwork across the African continent, opened a small studio dedicated to preserving these techniques while making them accessible to a contemporary audience.

What started as a passion project quickly grew into a community hub for African art and craft, with a team of skilled artisans creating both traditional and modern beadwork pieces. In 2015, we expanded to include educational workshops, sharing these ancient techniques with a new generation.

Today, Afri Beads is proud to be a center for cultural preservation and artistic innovation, connecting people to the rich heritage of African beadwork while supporting talented artisans and fostering a deeper appreciation for these traditional crafts

Our Process

From traditional techniques to contemporary designs, our process honors heritage while embracing innovation.

1. Material Selection

We source high-quality glass beads, natural materials, and sustainable supplies that meet our standards for both beauty and durability. Many of our materials come directly from African suppliers, supporting local economies.

2. Design & Pattern Work

Each design begins with research into traditional patterns and their meanings. Whether creating a historically accurate piece or a contemporary interpretation, we ensure the cultural significance is understood and respected.

3. Handcrafting

Our artisans work with patience and precision, using techniques passed down through generations. Each bead is carefully placed, each stitch meticulously made. This attention to detail ensures exceptional quality and artistry in every piece we create.
